Vilna University

Founded in 1579 as the Jesuit College of Vilnius by Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland, Stephen Báthory, it was one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe. In the aftermath of the Polish Uprising of 1830, the university was closed down and its operation suspended until 1919. Minister of Education Sergei Uvarov matched the closing of this one with the opening of St. Vladimir University in Kiev in 1834.
